Short-term and long-term survival in critical patients treated by helicopter emergency medical services in Finland: A registry study of 36 715 patients
BMJ Open Feb 27, 2021
Björkman J, Laukkanen-Nevala P, Olkinuora A, et al. - Patients treated by prehospital critical care teams were examined for their short-term and long-term mortality. A registry-based retrospective study was performed including all helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) dispatches in Finland from January 1, 2012 to September 8, 2019. Of 36,715 patients involving participation of prehospital critical care teams in the treatment, 34,370 were included in the study. Findings revealed a high rate of mortality after a HEMS team provided critical care and it continued to be significantly increased compared with the normal population for years after the incident. The medical reason for care and the age of the patient were identified influencing the mortality. They emphasize considering the long-term overmortality when evaluating the benefit of prehospital critical care in the different patient groups.
