Sex-specific association of tinnitus with suicide attempts
JAMA Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery May 09, 2019
Lugo A, et al. - Considering the case series studies indicating the association of severe tinnitus with suicide, researchers examined if men and women differ regarding this association using data from a large population-based study, the Stockholm Public Health Cohort (SPHC). Among 71,542 SPHC participants, a suicide attempt was made by 2,404 (3.4%). Tinnitus was reported by 16,066 (22.5%) respondents; 1,995 (2.8%) had severe tinnitus, and 1,484 (2.1%) had been diagnosed with tinnitus by a specialist. Findings revealed a sex-dependent association of tinnitus with suicide attempts; women (but not men) had an association of severe tinnitus with suicide attempts. Since a specialist had diagnosed only a fifth of the participants with severe tinnitus, they recommend increasing resources toward the management of tinnitus in clinical practice.
