Sex differences in subclinical cardiac disease in overweight and obesity (the FATCOR study)

Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Jun 26, 2018

Halland H, et al. - Researchers studied if the prevalence and type of subclinical cardiac disease, like abnormal left ventricular geometry or left atrial dilatation, in obesity differs by sex. From the FAT associated CardiOvasculaR dysfunction (FATCOR) study, they extracted clinical and echocardiographic data for 581 women and men without established cardiovascular disease and body mass index (BMI) > 27.0 kg/m2. They found that among the FATCOR study participants, subclinical cardiac disease was detected in most of the populace that was overweight and obese. They suggested that subclinical cardiac disease may account for the impaired prediction seen with obesity. Women vs men were found to have a higher prevalence of subclinical cardiac disease.
