Sex differences in management and outcomes of patients with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease: A report from TECOS

Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism Jun 26, 2018

Alfredsson J, et al. - In patients with type 2 diabetes and atherosclerotic vascular disease, researchers investigated sex differences in baseline characteristics and outcomes. An aggregate of 4,297 women and 10,374 men were assessed over a median of 3 years. The findings demonstrated that women had dissimilar cardiovascular (CV) disease burden, poorer CV risk factor profiles, and used less indicated medications vs men in this population. Researchers reported that women had a significantly lower risk of CV events, implying that the cardioprotective effects of female sex extend to populations with type 2 diabetes.
