Sex differences for anterior cervical fusion: Complications and length of stay
Spine Jul 14, 2018
Basques BA, et al. - Authors evaluated the differences in baseline characteristics between sexes of patients undergoing anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF)(a common treatment for cervical spine disease) and risk factors for adverse outcomes according to sex. They used the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS-NSQIP) database to identify patients who had ACDF from 2005 through 2014. Findings suggested an association of male sex with an increased risk of adverse events following ACDF. Previously, a correlation of male sex with medical comorbidities was seen, which may be partly responsible for the increased morbidity.
