Serum phosphorus and calcium levels and kidney disease progression in IgA nephropathy

Clinical Kidney Journal Jan 31, 2021

Yu G, Cheng J, Jiang Y, et al. - Researchers investigated whether and how serum phosphorus and calcium are related to progression of IgA nephropathy. They analyzed 2,567 patients suffering from IgA nephropathy, and obtained serum phosphorus and calcium at the time of kidney biopsy and each visit. A median follow-up of 31.9 months was performed. Experts found a linear association between serum phosphorus and composite kidney disease progression events (defined as 50% eGFR reduction and renal failure). They found no link between higher levels of serum calcium and kidney disease progression events, following adjustment for traditional risk factors. Overall, findings showed an independent association of higher serum phosphorus, rather than of serum calcium, with kidney disease progression in IgA nephropathy.
