Serum magnesium levels and mortality in Japanese maintenance hemodialysis patients
Blood Purification Apr 07, 2019
Tamura T, et al. - In a cohort of 392 Japanese patients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD), researchers assessed aortic arch calcification (AoAC) and mortality in relation to serum magnesium (Mg) levels. Based on the measured serum Mg levels, patients were divided into 3 groups and followed for 4 years. By means of chest-X-rays, they evaluated AoAC. A total of 117 deaths were documented during the follow-up period. Better survival and a higher prescription rate of Mg oxide (MgO) were reported in participants with hypermagnesemia. Also, better nutritional status related to higher serum albumin, triglyceride, and phosphate levels, as well as a significantly lower serum C-reactive protein level were observed in patients with high serum Mg levels.
