Serum amyloid A level correlates with T2 lesion volume and cortical volume in patients with multiple sclerosis

Journal of Neuroimmunology Dec 23, 2020

Yokote H, Toru S, Nishida Y, et al. - This study was undertaken to determine if brain atrophy in multiple sclerosis (MS) was correlated with not only neuroinflammation but also systemic inflammation. The authors discovered that systemic inflammatory marker serum amyloid A (SAA) in patients with the clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) and MS was moderately associated with the cortical volume. Even after adjusting for age, disease duration, and disease-modifying therapy, SAA was also significantly associated with T2 lesion volume (T2LV). Systemic inflammation may thus be related to cortical atrophy, likely through an increase in T2LV in CIS/MS patients.
