Septic arthritis of the hip—Risk factors associated with secondary surgery
Journal of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Apr 29, 2019
Murphy RF, et al. - In this multicenter retrospective review, researchers investigated 139 hips to know the risk factors for repeat surgical intervention after initial arthrotomy for presumed septic arthritis of the hip (SAH). They identified an infecting organism from 70 index intraoperative cultures. The most common was Staphylococcus aureus infections (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus [MRSA], 27; methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus, 25). For the management of presumed SAH, 41% of kids underwent at least one repeat surgical procedure after the index arthrotomy. Elevated initial erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein, infection with MRSA, and presence of osteomyelitis were the risk factors for return to the operating room.
