Schizophrenia is associated with increased risk of subsequent substance abuse diagnosis: A nation-wide population-based register study
Addiction Aug 08, 2019
Petersen SM, et al. - Researchers examined the risk of a substance abuse diagnosis in correlation to a diagnosis of schizophrenia via a prospective cohort study of 3,133,968 individuals. Schizophrenia developed in a total of 14,007 patients; an ensuing diagnosis of substance abuse was seen in 2,885 during follow-up (103,212,328 person-years at risk). The analysis suggests a significant association of developing schizophrenia with increased risk for subsequent diagnosis of substance abuse. Schizophrenia primarily associated with an increased risk of abuse of cannabis, alcohol, stimulants and other substances after adjusting for a co-abuse. Even 10–15 years after a diagnosis of schizophrenia the association was still significant.
