Safety of a brief Emergency Department Observation Protocol for patients with presumed fentanyl overdose

Scheuermeyer FX, et al. - The safety of an Emergency Department (ED) protocol for patients with presumed fentanyl overdose was determined. Researchers noted that deterioration, admission, mortality, and postdischarge complications were low in their cohort of ED patients with uncomplicated presumed fentanyl overdose, typically after naloxone injection. Majority of these patients could be discharged after brief observation. ED naloxone seemed not required for patients with normal triage vital signs.
