Role of potassium-sparing diuretics in the management of hypokalemia in peritoneal dialysis
American Journal of Therapeutics Jan 13, 2021
Nguyen T, Ren S, Hussain J, et al. - Researchers sought to examine the role of potassium-sparing diuretics for treating hypokalemia in patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD). They analyzed four relevant trials, including one randomized double-blind placebo-controlled cross-over study (n = 20), one interventional study without the control group (n = 20), one retrospective single-center chart review (n = 53), and one cross-sectional review (n = 75) trial. No statistically significant alteration in K concentrations was found in the randomized controlled trial; a rise in potassium concentrations in the potassium-sparing diuretics groups was documented in the other 3 trials, but trials comprised small participants and had inadequate statistic rigor. Based on these data, no clarity was gained concerning the role of potassium-sparing diuretics use for hypokalemia treatment in patients undergoing PD.
