Role of antithyroid autoimmunity as a predictive biomarker of chronic immune thrombocytopenia

Pediatric Blood & Cancer Oct 05, 2018

Giordano P, et al. - In a large cohort of pediatric patients with chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), researchers assessed the prevalence of positivity of antithyroid antibodies (antithyroperoxidase [TPO] and antithyroglobulin [TG]). In addition, whether autoimmune thyroiditis plays a part as a predictive factor for chronicity of ITP was evaluated. The results obtained from this multicenter retrospective study indicate that the prevalence of positivity for antithyroid antibodies (anti-TPO and anti-TG) in pediatric patients with chronic ITP results is significantly higher than in the general pediatric population. In pediatric patients, autoimmune thyroiditis did not seem to play a role as a predictive factor for chronicity of ITP. Findings suggested no association between the platelet count and the prevalence of positive antithyroid antibodies at any detection time of the study.
