Risk of subsequent sepsis within 90 days of a previous hospital stay by type of antibiotic exposure
Clinical Infectious Diseases Dec 14, 2017
Baggs J, et al. - In this study, the risk of sepsis within 90 days after discharge from a previous hospital stay by type of antibiotic received during the previous stay was investigated. Findings revealed that patients with exposure to high risk or increased quantities of antibiotics during hospitalization were at an increased risk of sepsis within 90 days of discharge. As a significant proportion of inpatient antimicrobial use may be unnecessary, findings suggested that improved stewardship efforts in hospitals would not only prevent antimicrobial resistance, CDI and other adverse effects, but also reduce unwanted outcomes potentially related to disruption of the microbiota, including sepsis.
