Risk of medical complications following total hip or knee arthroplasty in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: A register-based cohort study from Denmark
Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatism Jun 20, 2019
Cordtz R, et al. - Via a nationwide register-based study of 2,899 and 112,571 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA) who underwent total hip and knee arthroplasty (THA/TKA) surgery, the researchers investigated the risk of medical complications post-THA/TKA surgery and assessed the risk of complications among biologics-treated RA patients. In comparison to OA, no increased risk of post-surgical myocardial infarction and stroke in RA patients was noted. However, a higher incidence proportion in biologics treated in comparison to non-biologics treated was observed. Hence, RA patients were at a risk factor for infection post-THA/TKA. Although RA patients were at a lower risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) following THA/TKA when compared with OA, further studies are warranted scrutinizing increased incidences of VTE in biologics-treated patients.
