Risk of hepatocellular carcinoma in hepatitis B and D virus co‐infected patients: A systematic review and meta‐analysis of longitudinal studies

Journal of Viral Hepatitis Jul 29, 2021

Kamal H, Fornes R, Simin J, et al. - Researchers examined hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk among hepatitis D virus (HDV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) coinfected, vs HBV mono-infected patients. They analyzed 12 cohort studies with 6,099 HBV/HDV coinfected and 57,620 chronic HBV mono-infected patients. They employed random-effects models to ascertain aggregate effect sizes with 95% confidence intervals. Findings of this systematic review and meta-analysis revealed a 2-fold higher risk of HCC development in HDV and HBV coinfected patients, vs those with HBV mono-infection.
