Risk of comorbidities following physician‐diagnosed knee or hip osteoarthritis: A register‐based cohort study
Arthritis Care & Research Jun 10, 2021
Dell’Isola A, Pihl K, Turkiewicz A, et al. - This study sought to calculate the risk of developing comorbidities in patients after physician-diagnosed knee or hip osteoarthritis (OA). Researchers studied residents in the Skane region aged ≥ 35 years on January 1, 2010 free from diagnosed hip or knee OA (n= 548,681) using Swedish longitudinal healthcare register data. Individuals with at least one new diagnosis of knee or hip OA (incident OA) between 2010 and 2017 were distinguished (n=50,942 considered exposed). The results showed that incident physician-diagnosed knee and hip OA is correlated with elevated risk of depression, cardiovascular diseases, back pain, osteoporosis, and diabetes. However, the latter is only for knee OA.
