Risk of CIN3 or worse with persistence of 13 individual oncogenic HPV types

International Journal of Cancer Sep 28, 2018

Sand FL, et al. - Following persistence of 13 individual oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) types, researchers assessed the risk of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 3 or worse (CIN3+). They tested liquid-based cervical samples (n=40,399) for HPV by hybrid capture 2 and genotyped with INNO-LiPAv2. The definition of persistence was having the same genotype twice 1–4.5 years apart. They observed the highest risk of CIN3+ correlated with persistent HPV16 infection, with an 8-year absolute risk of 55%, followed by HPV33, HPV18, and HPV31. High risks were also observed in association with other HPV types, including HPV52 and HPV45. The lowest 8-year absolute risk of CIN3+ was observed in persistent HPV56. Findings offered information regarding the different carcinogenic potential of specific persistent oncogenic HPV types.
