Risk markers for limited coronary artery calcium in persons with significant aortic valve calcium (from the Multi-ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis)

The American Journal of Cardiology Jul 30, 2021

Razavi AC, Cardoso R, Dzaye O, et al. - Researchers investigated the markers related to limited coronary artery calcification (CAC) in individuals with significant aortic valve calcification (AVC). From the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, they selected 325 participants without clinical ASCVD and with AVC ≥100 Agatston units at Visit 1. CAC <100 was found to be present in 133 (41%) participants, of whom 46/133 had CAC = 0. The factors that were most strongly linked with limited CAC were younger age, female gender, and low 10-year ASCVD risk. Findings showed the presence of CAC in more than 40% of individuals with significant AVC. Beyond conventional risk factors, lower serum phosphate, and lower calcium-phosphate product were shown to be related to a higher prevalence of limited CAC.
