Risk indicators for root caries in older adults using long-term social care facilities in Hong Kong

Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology Sep 17, 2019

Zhang J, et al. - Among the Hong Kong older adults who visited long-term care facilities regularly, researchers studied risk indicators correlated with root caries. Nonfrail older adults from 10 long-term social or residential care facilities with at least six natural teeth have been examined. Two calibrated dentists in the organizations performed the clinical exams. To identify the connections between DF-root and D-root, as well as selected person-level and tooth surface-level factors, multilevel logistic regression analyses have been performed. In total, 353 older adults (mean age 74.9 years) were analyzed in this investigation. Data reported that DF-root and D-root had a prevalence of 43.1% and 30.0% and the mean DF-root and D-root scores were 1.3 and 0.7, respectively. In this study, it was found that older individuals had a higher prevalence and root caries severity. In older adults, coronal caries experience, maxillary teeth, buccal root surfaces, gingival recession and plaque on the root surface were positively linked to root caries.
