Risk factors for tinnitus in 37,692 patients followed in general practices in Germany

Otology & Neurotology Mar 24, 2019

Kostev K, et al. - Among 18,846 with tinnitus and 18,846 matched controls without tinnitus patients followed in general practices in Germany, researchers analyzed risk factors for tinnitus. Between January 2014 and December 2017, patients who had received a first tinnitus diagnosis in one of 928 general practices were involved. Diseases of the ear, diseases of the upper respiratory tract, mental disorders, diseases of the nervous system, endocrine diseases, diseases of the circulatory system, and hemolytic anemias were potential risk factors for tinnitus included in the present study. To analyze the association between defined diagnoses and tinnitus, a multivariate logistic regression with stepwise selection was used. Tinnitus was significantly associated with a total of 20 diseases. Vestibular neuronitis, Menière's disease, Eustachian salpingitis and obstruction, presbycusis, and otalgia and ear effusion were the five diagnoses displaying the strongest effect. Overall, the investigators suggested that tinnitus has been associated with a wide range of conditions, especially ear disorders.
