Risk factors for infection in fixation of distal tibia fractures

Injury Mar 03, 2021

Toro-Aguilera A, Zuriarrain SW, Masdeu MG, et al. - Researchers conducted a retrospective and descriptive study based on 55 patients treated in their Major Trauma Centre with the aim to evaluate risk factors for infection as well as infection rates after open reduction and internal fixation for distal tibia fractures with a distal tibia locking plate and/or isolated screws. Among these patients, infection rate of 31.5% was observed, mainly caused by S. aureus. Findings revealed no correlations between fracture pattern, external fixation, corticosteroids or open fracture and infection. In cases with a splint use, they noted a positive correlation between infection and shorter time until definitive fixation. Greater age was identified to be a predisposing factor for infection.
