Risk factors for early childhood caries: A systematic review and meta-analysis of case-control and cohort studies

Kirthiga M, et al. - In this systematic review, investigators researched the link between various risk factors and the prevalence of early childhood caries (ECC) by assessing 7,034 records involving 89 studies (1,352,097 individuals). They observed a total of 123 risk factors. Presence of dentinal caries and elevated levels of mutans streptococci were the strongest risk factors detected in the high-income countries. They also noted the presence of enamel defects as the strongest risk factor in upper-middle-income countries.
