Risk factors for breakthrough SARS-CoV-2 infection in vaccinated healthcare workers

PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases Oct 24, 2021

Alishaq M, Nafady-Hego H, Jeremijenko A, et al. - Researchers sought the risk factors for breakthrough SARS-CoV-2 infection after completion of a full course of vaccination among healthcare workers (HCWs) at Hamad Medical Corporation in Qatar.

  • A total of 22,247 fully vaccinated HCWs were identified; 164 of these HCWs had breakthrough infection.

  • Comparison of the HCWs with breakthrough infection was done with 164 matched controls to determine the risk factors for breakthrough infection.

  • Major risk factors for breakthrough SARS-CoV-2 infection after vaccination include presence of symptoms and contact with a confirmed case; prioritization of these groups for screening is recommended even after full vaccination.
