Risk factors for acute stroke-associated pneumonia and prediction of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratios

The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Dec 23, 2020

Witcraft SM, Dixon LJ, Leukel P, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to analyze the risk factors for stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP) and evaluate the predictive impact of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) on acute SAP. The research included acute stroke patients between April 2018 and June 2019. The history of chronic diseases, including the history of hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, chronic lung disease, and current smoking status, was evaluated in patients. In total, 328 eligible acute stroke patients were involved. Multivariable analysis of Binary Logistic regression showed that cerebral hemorrhage, indwelling gastric tube, and NLR were independent risk factors for SAP. For SAP, the risk factors were multifaceted. In patients with acute stroke, an early NLR had a predictive effect on the occurrence of SAP.
