Rice intake and risk of type 2 diabetes: The Singapore Chinese Health Study
European Journal of Nutrition Dec 13, 2018
Seah JYH, et al. - Researchers evaluated whether the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) was associated with rice, noodles, and bread intake in this study involving a Chinese ethnic population. Data from 45,411 male and female Chinese participants in the Singapore Chinese Health Study cohort aged 45–74 years at baseline were included. A full 5,207 incident cases of T2D were documented during a mean follow-up of 11 years. In this Chinese population, higher rice consumption was not substantially linked to a higher risk of T2D. The replacement of one serving daily of rice with noodles, red meat, and poultry were correlated with a higher T2D risk, while the replacement of rice with white bread or wholemeal bread was related to a lower T2D risk. Recommendations to reduce the high consumption of white rice in Asian populations for the prevention of T2D can only be effective if replacement food is carefully considered.
