Rheumatoid arthritis flares after total hip and total knee arthroplasty: Outcomes at 1 year
Arthritis Care & Research Oct 23, 2019
Goodman SM, Mirza SZ, DiCarlo EF, et al. - In this investigation, researchers characterized the association of perioperative disease activity and flares of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with pain and function scores one year after total hip arthroplasty (THA)/total knee arthroplasty (TKA). They collected Patient Reported Outcomes (PROS) including Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis/disability and injury Outcome Scores (HOOS/KOOS) and MD assessments of disease characteristics and activity (DAS 28, CDAI) prior to surgery. For 122 patients, one-year HOOS/KOOS scores were available. For pain or function scores, postoperative flares were not independent risk factors. One year after arthroplasty, higher disease activity increased the risk of worse pain and function.
