Retrospective cohort study of hospital variation in airway management during in-hospital cardiac arrest and the association with patient survival: Insights from Get With The Guidelines-Resuscitation

Critical Care May 10, 2019

Bradley SM, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers reported on the variation in endotracheal intubation, at the hospital level, during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA). They also focused on the link between hospital use of endotracheal intubation and arrest survival. In a national sample of patients with IHCA at Get With The Guidelines-Resuscitation participating hospitals, they noted variations in the use of endotracheal intubation during CPR across hospitals. Use of endotracheal intubation during CPR among hospitals was strongly inversely related to survival to discharge; however, only patients without respiratory failure prior to arrest exhibited this link.
