Restoration of continence after prostatectomy is associated with weight loss: A pilot study
Urology Sep 03, 2021
Bhanvadia RR, Dropkin BM, Wolfe AR, et al. - Findings suggest correlation of severe post prostatectomy incontinence (PPI) with weight gain and correction of PPI via artificial urinary sphincter (AUS) insertion with weight loss.
Inclusion criteria for the study were met by 187 AUS and 63 inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP) patients.
Twelve months post UPS, a mean BMI reduction of -1.0 kg/m2 was recorded among men with AUS vs a mean BMI rise in the IPP cohort of 0.4 kg/m2.
Absolute body weight reduction by 6 kg was recorded for AUS vs IPP patients, with nearly one-third having clinically significant weight loss (> 5% body weight) at 12 months post UPS (31.8% vs 8.3%).
