Response to laser treatment of cafe au lait macules based on morphologic features
JAMA Dermatology Nov 23, 2017
Belkin DA, et al. - The proposition explored herein was that irregularly bordered cafe au lait macules (CALMs) of the Âcoast of Maine subtype responded better to treatment than those of the smooth-bordered Âcoast of California subtype. It was deduced that CALMs with jagged or ill-defined borders of the coast of Maine subtype exhibited the tendency to respond well to laser treatment. On the other hand, those with smooth and well-defined borders of the coast of California subtype reported a poor response. Clinicians using Q-switched or picosecond lasers to treat CALMs were advised to use morphologic characteristics for speculating the response and more effectively managing the patient expectations.
