Resistin is elevated in cystic fibrosis sputum and correlates negatively with lung function

Journal of Cystic Fibrosis Jun 27, 2018

Forrest OA, et al. - Researchers assessed the association of resistin with cystic fibrosis (CF) lung disease in three retrospective CF cohorts. Plasma and sputum levels of resistin were measured and a multivariate model was constructed to evaluate the above-mentioned link. They found that vs healthy controls, only marginally higher plasma resistin levels were detected in CF patients. Conversely, CF patients had very high sputum resistin levels, attaining 50-100-fold higher levels than in plasma. Higher plasma resistin levels were associated with allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, and higher sputum resistin levels were associated with CF-related diabetes in CF patients. Overall, the observed links between resistin levels in the plasma and sputum of CF patients showed a correlation with disease status. Moreover, resistin was identified as a novel mechanistic link between neutrophilic inflammation and lung disease in CF.
