Reporting outcomes and outcome measures in thumb carpometacarpal joint osteoarthritis: A systematic review

The Journal of Hand Surgery Aug 23, 2020

Copeland A, Gallo L, Weber C, et al. - This study was attempted to distinguish a comprehensive list of outcomes and outcome measures for thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) joint osteoarthritis (OA), which represents the first step in developing a core outcome set (COS). Researchers carried out to search MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane, and CINAHL to distinguish randomized controlled trials, as well as observational studies involving at least 50 participants aged greater than 18 years undergoing surgery for thumb CMC joint OA. They extracted reported outcomes and outcome measures from these trials and summarized. In this study, 3,498 unique articles were yielded during the search, 97 of which were applied for analysis. They distinguished a sum of 33 unique outcomes and 25 unique outcome measures. After surgery, there is a lack of consensus on critical outcomes for thumb CMC joint OA. The outcomes suggested that a standardized COS created by stakeholder consensus would improve the consistency and thus the quality of future research.
