Relationship of patellofemoral osteoarthritis to changes in performance-based physical function over 7 years: The Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study
The Journal of Rheumatology Jan 06, 2022
Hart HF, Neogi T, LaValley M, et al. - In this study, an over time worsening of performance-based function was evident in persons with radiographic patellofemoral osteoarthritis (PFOA) and those with radiographic PFOA with frequent knee pain.
This study included 2,666 participants (62.2 ± 8.0 yrs, BMI 30.6 ± 5.9 kg/m 2, 60% female) from the Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study, to investigate the association of PFOA with changes in performance-based function over 7 years.
In linear models, a significant group-by-time interaction was shown for the repeated chair stands and the 20-meter walk test (20MWT).
Relative to baseline, 1.01 seconds longer on the repeated chair stands and 1.69 seconds longer on the 20MWT was evident at 7 years in patients with radiographic PFOA.
A significant group-by-time interaction was seen for repeated chair stands and the 20MWT when assessing the association between radiographic PFOA with frequent knee pain and performance-based function.
Increase in time on the repeated chair stands by 1.12 seconds and on the 20MWT by 1.91 seconds was observed over 7 years in those with radiographic PFOA with frequent knee pain.
