Relationship between serum vitamin D levels and health-related quality of life in maintenance hemodialysis patients
Blood Purification Feb 26, 2019
Kara AV, et al. - In this cross-sectional study including 123 maintenance hemodialysis patients, researchers examined the link between serum vitamin D levels and health-related quality of life, assessed by Kidney Disease Quality of Life 36 (KDQOL-36) survey. Two groups were defined based on serum vitamin D levels: 78 subjects having vitamin D deficiency and 45 subjects identified normal with serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH] D) level of < 20 ng/mL and ≥20 ng/mL, respectively. Participants had mean age of 62 years and 56% were male, with mean 25(OH) D levels of 11.86 and 29.57 ng/mL, respectively, in 2 groups. The link between serum vitamin D levels and KDQOL-36 in hemodialysis patients was demonstrated for the first time. Significant predictors of vitamin D deficiency were age and gender. Findings revealed a negative association of lower serum vitamin D levels with burden of kidney disease, physical component summary (PCS), and mental component summary (MCS) subscales.
