Relationship between left ventricular ejection fraction and cardiovascular outcomes following hospitalization for heart failure: Insights from the RELAX‐AHF‐2 trial
European Journal of Heart Failure Mar 14, 2020
Janwanishstaporn S, Feng S, Teerlink J, et al. - Researchers analyzed a large, well characterized cohort comprising patients hospitalized for acute heart failure (AHF), to determine the link between left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and cardiovascular (CV) outcomes in this patient group. They split patients (n = 6,128) from the RELAX‐AHF‐2 trial, who had LVEF recorded during AHF hospitalization, into LVEF quartiles. They evaluated the association between LVEF and a composite of CV mortality and rehospitalization for heart failure (HF) or renal failure during 180 days. In this patient population, more frequent occurrence of CV events over 180 days was reported in patients who exhibited a lower LVEF. The main reason for this was a significant rise in risk for HF/renal failure rehospitalization but not in either CV or all‐cause mortality. Among patients with ischaemic aetiology or pre‐existing HF, a greater prognostic worth of LVEF was evident.
