Relation of obesity to outcomes of hospitalizations for atrial fibrillation
The American Journal of Cardiology Apr 10, 2019
Agarwal MA, et al. - Using the National Inpatient Sample database 2010 to 2014, researchers determined how outcomes of hospitalizations for atrial fibrillation (AF) were influenced by the presence of obesity. They identified 431,734 patient hospitalizations (aged ≥ 18years) for AF, among whom obesity was present in 15.3%. They compared obese and non-obese patients with AF with respect to in-hospital outcomes (mortality, acute stroke events) by using multivariable logistic regression. Lower risk-adjusted odds of in-hospital mortality and stroke events, consistent with an "obesity paradox,” were found in obese patients in this large retrospective analysis of an unselected nationwide cohort.
