Relation of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio to risk of incident atrial fibrillation
The American Journal of Cardiology Nov 10, 2018
Berkovitch A, et al. - Since clinical and experimental data support that a critical role is played by inflammation in cardiovascular disease, researchers assessed the link between neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR; an inflammatory marker) and incident atrial fibrillation (AF) in asymptomatic adults. Participants were 21,118 self-referred men and women who were annually screened in a tertiary medical center who were free of AF at baseline and had their serum NLR calculated at the first annual visit. The baseline NLR was used to categorize participants into a low group (<2.83; N=17,524) and a high group (≥2.83; N=3,594; Upper Sextile). A higher risk of new onset AF was observed in relation to a high NLR. This finding was more conspicuous in young adults.
