Regional variation of computed tomographic imaging in the United States and the risk of nephrectomy

JAMA Internal Medicine Jan 05, 2018

Welch HG, et al. - This study was performed to assess the correlation of the proportion of the population undergoing computed tomography (CT) with the risk of nephrectomy. It was observed that CT imaging was commonly performed among fee-for-service Medicare beneficiaries. Among those residing in high-scanning regions, a higher risk of nephrectomy was evident, presumably reflecting the incidental detection of renal masses. Additional surgery should be considered one of the risks of excessive CT scanning.
