Redundant imaging in transient ischemic attack: Evidence from the nationwide emergency department sample

Journal of the American College of Radiology Jul 31, 2021

Timpone VM, Jensen A, Poisson SN, et al. - Researchers sought to describe the most commonly used combinations of imaging studies during emergency department (ED) workup of transient ischemic attack (TIA) and to quantify the prevalence of redundant imaging (RI). Between 2006 and 2017, TIA discharges from EDs in the United States were identified in the Nationwide Emergency Department Sample. Using Current Procedural Terminology codes, brain and neurovascular imaging obtained during the encounter was identified. In 2017, there were 184,870 TIA discharges from EDs. RI (brain) was detected in 55,513 (30%) of encounters. The rising use of RI is associated with increased imaging utilization for TIA workup across EDs in the United States. The authors identify imaging practices that could be targeted in order to reduce healthcare costs while adhering to TIA imaging guidelines.
