Red cell distribution width (RDW): An unacknowledged predictor of mortality and adverse outcomes following revision arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty Jul 12, 2018
Aalirezaie A, et al. - Experts gauged the possible relationship between preoperative red blood cell distribution width (RDW) levels and outcome of revision arthroplasty in terms of mortality, adverse outcomes, and length of hospital stay (LOS). Findings suggested an association of higher levels of preoperative RDW with less optimal outcomes after revision total joint arthroplasties (TJA). Awareness regarding this predictive factor should be created among the adult reconstruction orthopedic surgeons. They should exercise caution with TJA revision patients with high values of preoperative RDW. Authors suggested that in the routine perioperative work-up, RDW could be included and used to counsel patients on their postoperative risk.
