Recreational drug and excessive alcohol use among HIV-infected men who have sex with men in Central Israel
BMC Public Health Nov 07, 2019
Mor Z, et al. - In this cross-sectional analysis, researchers assessed the prevalence of recreational drugs (RD)/excessive alcohol (EA) use among HIV-infected men who have sex with men (MSM). They also performed a comparison between those who used RD/EA vs those who did not. They included HIV-infected MSM selected from two AIDS-treatment centers, as well as events for HIV-infected MSM in Israel in 2016. This study sample consisted of 276 HIV-infected MSM, among whom RD/EA use was reported in roughly 73%. A lower CD4-count and higher viral-load were observed in HIV-infected MSM who used RD/EA vs those who did not. Upon multivariate analysis, RD/EA use among HIV-infected MSM was found to be associated with being younger, earlier sexual debut, and psychiatric drug prescription. The use of RD/EA, as well as indulgence in risky sexual behaviors, was reported by a large proportion of HIV-infected MSM. Mental support during routine treatment at the AIDS treatment centers may thus be beneficial for this subset of HIV-infected MSM.
