Recovery from copperhead snake envenomation: Role of age, gender, bite location, severity, and treatment
Journal of Medical Toxicology Jan 12, 2020
Lavonas EJ, et al. - Researchers conducted a posthoc subgroup analysis of data from a multi-center double-blinded clinical trial of Fab antivenom (FabAV) vs placebo in order to investigate the time course of recovery from copperhead snake (Agkistrodon contortrix) envenomation patients treated with and without the use of antivenom, stratified by age, gender, anatomic site of envenomation, initial severity of envenomation, and geographic region. Assessment of 72 individuals was done, of these 44 received FabAV. Relative to females, males showed better overall recovery. In terms of response to FabAV, there was no gender difference. Similar recovery and effect of FabAV were reported overall in adult vs adolescent cases, cases with upper vs lower extremity envenomation, and cases with initially mild vs moderate envenomation signs.
