Rate of patients at elevated risk of opioid overdose visiting the Emergency Department
The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Mar 30, 2018
Pedigo JR, et al. - The rate of patients visiting the Emergency Department who are at risk of opioid overdose is determined. From 2013 to 2016, a significant increase (from 0.12% to 0.56%) in the rate of patients visiting the Emergency Department at risk of opioid overdose was noted. This patient cohort was not prescribed naloxone routinely. For patients on opioids, an increase (from 9.72% to 28.24%) in the rate of patients on 100 morphine equivalents (MME) daily or greater was observed from 2013 to 2016. No significant change in the rate of patients on opioid therapy in combination with benzodiazepine therapy was observed during this period.
