Race as a predictor of recurrence and complications after urethroplasty in men with urethral stricture disease
Urology Dec 04, 2021
Sawyer KN, et al. - Analyzing the impact of race on outcomes after urethroplasty for urethral stricture repair, it was noted that the rate of surgical failure among patients did not differ significantly based on race.
In this single institution, retrospective review, 234 eligible male patients ≥ 18 years of age who underwent urethroplasty were analyzed. (63.2% identified as White/Caucasian (CA), 32.5% Black/African American (AA), and 4.3% other race).
Greater probability of having a fossa navicularis stricture was noted for CAs vs AAs, but bulbar, penile, or posterior stricture rates or length were not significantly different.
An overall stricture recurrence rate of 15.8% was noted with a median of 242 days to recurrence and no significant disparity by race for either outcome.
Prior dilation/DVIU was revealed as the sole predictor of stricture recurrence (OR 2.3).
The overall complication rate was 17.5%, without difference between CA and AAs rates or complication type.
