Q fever seroprevalence in parturient women: The EQRUN cross-sectional study on Reunion island
BMC Infectious Diseases Apr 09, 2020
Jaubert J, Atiana L, Larrieu S, et al. - After examining the obstetrical importance of Q fever on Reunion island and establishing a link between incident Q fever and miscarriage, researchers sought to determine the prevalence of Q fever (Coxiella burnetii infection) among parturient women via performing a cross-sectional serosurvey. From January 9 to July 24, 2014, screening of all parturient women for Coxiella burnetii serology was proposed within the level-4 maternity of Saint Pierre hospital and the level-1 maternity of Le Tampon. Screening 1,112 parturient women for Q fever over this 7-month period yielded seropositive results in 203 (18.3%). As per the magnitude and pattern of seroprevalence, Q fever is endemic on Reunion island. In this context, prevalent Coxiella burnetii infection was identified to have no significant contribution to adverse pregnancy outcomes. Although reassuring, these data put in the endemic context, with a previously established elevated risk of incident Q fever linked miscarriage, emphasize to protect pregnant women against the risk of new infection, periconceptional or early in pregnancy.
