Punch "scoring": A technique that facilitates melanoma diagnosis of clinically suspicious pigmented lesions

Grogan J, et al. – This study encompassed the assessment of the punch biopsy Âscoring accuracy of suspicious foci in excised atypical pigmented skin lesions. The intent was to detect early melanomas. This technique permitted direct clinicopathological association and enabled early melanoma diagnosis by targeting clinically suspicious areas. There was no need of special expertise in ex vivo clinical techniques for its implementation. The lesion analysis, however, beyond the scored focus was required for diagnosing melanoma in certain cases.
