Psychological distress and nutritional status in head and neck cancer patients: A pilot study
European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology Feb 12, 2020
Gosak M, et al. - In this pilot study, experts aspired to explore if the psychological state of patients with head and neck cancer (HCN), eighth most common cancer worldwide, was correlated with their nutritional status. The psychological and nutritional status were evaluated prior to treatment in 40 individuals with locally advanced HNC treated with definitive or adjuvant (chemo)radiotherapy, at completion and 3 months post-therapy. More patients were screened positive for anxiety before treatment than at the completion of treatment or 3 months post-therapy. At the end and after therapy, depression prevalence was non-significantly higher. More cachectic patients and a decrease of phase angle values were observed at successive assessments relative to the baseline. Anxiety was more frequently found in malnourished/cachectic patients who were also more frequently found to be depressed. The link between the psychological and nutritional status found in this investigation and the options for intervention warrants further clarification in a larger prospective trial.
