Proton pump inhibitors not associated with hypomagnesemia, regardless of dose or concomitant diuretic use
Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Apr 10, 2018
Chowdhry M, et al. - Researchers enquired regarding any clinically significant alteration in serum magnesium levels in large groups of patients taking different proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) in varying doses, with or without diuretics for upper gastrointestinal acid-related disorders. Findings displayed that magnesium levels remained unaffected irrespective of PPI dosage or concomitant diuretics prescribed, with no statistical difference in the prevalence of hypomagnesemia. Furthermore, no major variations were found in serum magnesium levels between those taking PPIs of varying doses, with or without concomitant diuretics, and those not taking PPIs or diuretics. It was determined that routine screening of serum magnesium was unnecessary in PPI patients.
