Proteinuria as a significant predictive factor for the progression of carotid artery atherosclerosis in non-albuminuric type 2 diabetes

Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Oct 11, 2021

Kim YE, Lee M, Lee YH, et al. - Findings indicate the likely usefulness of high urine protein to creatinine ratio (uPCR) as a predictive marker for the progression of carotid artery atherosclerosis, even in individuals with T2D and without albuminuria.

  • This retrospective longitudinal study included 927 patients with type 2 diabetes and normoalbuminuria (urine albumin to creatinine ratio < 30 mg/g).

  • A positive correlation of higher initial uPCR with a greater increment in maximal carotid artery intima-media thickness (cIMT) was found and it remained significant even post-adjustment for multiple confounding factors.

  • In a simple logistic regression model, high baseline uPCR was shown as an independent predictive factor for the elevated risk of maximal cIMT progression (OR, 1.41).

  • There was a significant link of higher uPCR with a higher risk of cIMT progression (OR, 1.48) even post-adjustment for various confounding variables.
