Prospective randomized controlled trial for patch augmentation in rotator cuff repair: 24-month outcomes

Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Sep 26, 2019

Avanzi P, dei Giudici L, Capone A, et al. - In this single-center, prospective, double-blinded, randomized controlled trial involving 92 patients, researchers assessed the anatomic integrity of rotator cuff repair performed by medialized single row and augmented by a porcine dermal patch, in comparison with a nonaugmented group. Participants in the study were patients who were equally randomized into two homogenous groups. The 24-month follow-up was finished by 69 patients. With the addition of a porcine dermal patch, rotator cuff repairs resulted in outstanding clinical outcomes with a higher healing rate and close-to-normal MRI results. The technique is safe and effective; moreover, it is reproducible and enables better results than standard medialized single-row repairs.
